Our Team
The Camp Milton staff are dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to make Camp Milton the best week of the year for our campers. Even though it takes hundreds of hours throughout the year to raise funds and plan the daily camp activities, there are no salaries! They do this because this camp and the kids that attend mean that much to them.
Executive Director
Jess Hermanson
Jess is from Overland Park, KS and worked as a pediatric nurse for 7 years. She now stays home with her children. Her husband, Alec, has been coming to camp since 2012. They reside in Prairie Village, KS with their three children and puppy Millie. Jess has been involved in camp since 2009. As executive director, Jess’ goal is to get kids to camp and make sure they have the best week of the year! “When you come to camp, and get to know these kids and the counselors, then you understand how important this week is!” Her favorite activities are the dance, the Maddox Truitt Talent Show, and all the little moments in between. “I love to see the impact Camp Milton has on everyone!”
Media & Logistics
Tyler Hannsz
Tyler grew up in Liberty, Missouri. He earned a Master of Music from the University of Missouri and a Master of Social work from Washington University in St. Louis. Tyler has been a counselor at multiple camps in Kansas, Oregon, and Montana starting in 2016. Tyler loves the magic that happens when a group of people turn a disability into an opportunity to empower young minds to live beyond their limitations. His favorite camp activity? Canteen. Tyler likes his snacks (particularly the cheese balls and energy drinks he hides under his bunk).
Planning & Implementation
Kate Elmore
Kate got involved with camp in 2011. She graduated from Blue Springs High School and continued her education at Mizzou, where she earned a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Special Education with an emphasis in autism. At camp, Kate loves fishing in the pond, splash time at the pool, and s’mores at every camp fire. Most of all, she loves the magic of camp and that it’s not just a one week feeling but year long love! Kate is so happy to be a part of this team and to help make Camp Milton what it is.
Finance & Administration
Alex Hinken, M.D.
Alex grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri and began volunteering as a camp counselor in 2013. He has since volunteered at summer camps in Missouri, Kansas, and Oregon. Anyone who knows Alex knows he'd stay at Camp Milton year-round if he could!
Alex earned a B.S. in both Biology and Psychology in 2017 and an M.D. from the University of Missouri in 2024. He currently works as an Emergency Medicine Resident Physician in Detroit, Michigan. Prior to starting medical school, Alex spent 4 years doing research on a gene therapy treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Communications & Family Outreach
Lauren Wegley-Simon
Lauren Wegley-Simon grew up in Olathe Kansas. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Olivet Nazarene University in 2011, and a Masters in Counseling from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2018. She and her husband Drew currently live in Olathe where Lauren is an elementary school counselor.
Lauren started coming to camp in 2012 and spent a decade as a counselor for Lindsay Cochran. Lauren loves all of the fun and exciting accessible activities at camp, however she believes the most beautiful magic happens in the small moments. The roaring laughter in the cabins, the zooming sounds of power wheelchairs racing and circling around each other, and watching carefree moments of fun grow into lifelong friendships.
Lauren's goal is for the magic of Camp Milton to reach as many kids as possible!
Camp Activity Coordinator
Angie Hills
Angie Hills grew up in Virginia Beach, VA and Coatesville, PA. Now, she calls Bradenton, FL home. Angie holds the record on the leadership team for the longest tenure with camp. She started back in 2005 and she's been involved with planning and making camp happen ever since!
Now, you can catch her rocking creative costumes and planning the incredible activities that keep camp exciting while also maintaining years of tradition.
When Angie was asked what her favorite camp activity was, she had a simple answer: "All of them! Every minute of camp is my favorite!"
Fundraising & Development
Sandy Becker
Sandy lives west of Topeka with her husband, Jim where they raised their three boys. She has been a professional graphic designer for over 35 years and brings her talents to the table with Camp Milton as well by designing marketing materials to promote our camp to families and potential sponsors.
Sandy volunteered at her first camp in 2017 after spending over 25 years raising funds to help provide our campers with the best week of the year. Now it's a family affair. Her three sons are involved in fund raising and volunteering at camp.
Her favorite camp activity? Arrival day! She loves seeing everyone's smiling faces as they pull into the parking lot and settle back into a home away from home. And she loves seeing how everyone forms special bonds each day of camp.
Camp Mascot & Adventurer
Milton the Moose
Mr. Milton has left his permanent hoof print at Camp Milton since 2006. Carved from a large family tree, he stood out to the campers as something special from the very beginning. Milton is always excited to see the kids come pouring in on the first day of camp. And he is always ready for anything to happen, knowing that each cabin strategically plans a way to kidnap him in the midst of the busy activities each day. Oh, the shenanigans of being held for ransom!! Milton's favorite activity is just spending time with each and every camp so they will always remember the greatest week of the year!
